A plasma direct current electric arc furnace is a type of smelting equipment that uses a plasma arc as the heat source to melt and refine metals or alloys. Here is a detailed introduction:
Basic Introduction
- Composition: It is mainly composed of three parts: the plasma gun, the furnace body, and the DC power supply. The plasma gun is composed of a water-cooled copper nozzle and a water-cooled cerium-tungsten rod electrode. The furnace body is similar to an ordinary electric arc furnace, including a water-cooled furnace cover, furnace walls and furnace bottom built with refractory materials, and is also equipped with a furnace door and a tapping groove. A conductive bottom anode is buried at the furnace bottom to form a conductive loop.
- Working Principle: First, a DC voltage is applied between the cathode and the nozzle, and then argon is introduced. A high-frequency igniter is used to strike an arc, ionizing the argon to generate a non-transfer arc. Then, a DC voltage is applied between the cathode and the bottom anode of the furnace, and the plasma gun is lowered to make the non-transfer arc approach the charge, generating a transfer arc. Once the transfer arc is formed, the non-transfer arc is extinguished.
Characteristics
- High Arc Temperature: The arc temperature can reach about 20,000 °C, which can melt refractory metals such as tungsten, molybdenum, niobium, zirconium, titanium and their alloys.
- Controllable Atmosphere: By selecting different working gases such as argon and nitrogen, the furnace atmosphere can be controlled to achieve special metallurgical effects, such as smelting nitrogen-containing austenitic stainless steel.
- Avoidance of Carbon Increase: The water-cooled metal plasma gun replaces the graphite electrode, avoiding the carbon increase of the molten steel by the electrode, which is suitable for the smelting of ultra-low carbon stainless steel.
